About the painting

Marie Ginoux ran the Café de la Gare in Arles, where Van Gogh lodged in 1888. She sat for him and for Paul Gauguin that November, and Van Gogh painted her several times. Here she sits at a table with books, in the black dress of a woman of Arles, against a flat field of bright yellow — the strong outlines and blocks of colour typical of his time in the south of France.

How to solve it

Large flat areas of one colour make this harder than it looks. Start with her face, hands and the books, where the detail is, then the outline of the black dress. Sort the yellow background by the direction of the brushstrokes, which you can see on every piece.
