About the painting

One of Vermeer’s earliest scenes of everyday life: a young woman dozes at a table, her head on her hand, beside a heavy Turkish carpet, a wine jug and a bowl of fruit. Through an open door is a second, brighter room. X-rays show that Vermeer first painted a man in that doorway and a dog, then took them out, leaving the quiet, unexplained moment we see now.

How to solve it

As a puzzle, the carpet and the still life on the table are the richest part — patterned and full of colour. Build those first, then the doorway and the room beyond, whose straight lines are easy to follow. The dark wall and the maid’s dress are the slow areas.
