About the painting

A full-length portrait of a gentleman of Seville by Bartolomé Esteban Murillo, the city’s most celebrated painter. Don Andrés stands in black beside a large, patient dog, framed by carved stone architecture. It is a portrait of a man and of his standing in the city, painted with Murillo’s soft, warm light.

How to solve it

The tall, narrow format and the black clothing make this a test. Start with the face, the white collar and cuffs and the dog, then the stonework, whose straight edges are a help. Leave the dark coat and shadows for last.
