About the painting

Everhard Jabach, a banker and one of the great art collectors of seventeenth-century Paris, sits with his wife and children among the things that defined him: books, a classical bust and instruments of learning. Charles Le Brun, soon to be Louis XIV’s first painter, included himself too, reflected in a mirror on the left. The Metropolitan Museum acquired the painting in 2014.

How to solve it

A crowded group portrait is a good large puzzle: every face and costume is different. Build the family figure by figure, then the objects around them. The dark background and floor are best left for last, placed by their outlines against the figures.
