About the painting

Salvator Rosa, a painter, poet and actor from Naples, shows himself as a serious philosopher in a dark cloak, crowned with a wreath of cypress, a symbol of mourning, and writing on a skull. It was painted in Florence in the 1640s and is one of the most striking self-portraits of the Italian seventeenth century.

How to solve it

A dark portrait with one lit face. Build the face, the skull and the hands first, then the wreath. The cloak and background are near-black: sort those pieces by faint warm and cool tints and by the direction of the folds.
