About the painting

The three kings kneel before the Virgin and Child to offer their gifts, in a painting by Joos van Wassenhove, also known as Justus of Ghent. An early Netherlandish painter, he later worked in Italy at the court of Federico da Montefeltro in Urbino, bringing Flemish detail to an Italian setting.

How to solve it

Start with the figures and their rich robes, which carry most of the colour, and the Virgin and Child at the centre. The architecture and landscape behind are softer; follow their lines and tone shifts once the figures are in place.
