About the painting

The Gospel story of a storm on the Sea of Galilee: the disciples struggle with oars and sail as waves break over the boat, while Christ sleeps calmly in the stern, his halo the brightest point in the picture. Delacroix returned to the subject several times in the 1850s; the contrast between the frightened figures and the sleeping one is the heart of every version.

How to solve it

Begin with the boat and the figures, where Delacroix’s bright reds and blues are concentrated, and the glowing halo. The sea and the stormy sky are dark greens and greys: sort them by the light catching the wave tops and the break in the clouds.
